Hat Yai

Today is goodbye to Hat Yai and on to Ko Tautao, a national park that used to be the Devil's Island of Thailand up until WWII.

Hat Yai may be in the troubled zone of the far south, but from what I can see, someone forgot to tell the folks here.

Thousands of Malay shoppers flock here every weekend, and the streets are a seething, sweaty mass of shoppers, food stalls and hawkers. It is glorious, with Thai, Malaysian, Chinese and bad English filling the air.

There are farang here, a few. Oil workers, mostly Brits haunt some bars and well worn backpackers make up the rest. Almost all of the tourist here are Malay.

So, in minutes it is a mini- bus to Pakabara, then some sort of speedboat to the island. Wireless will be spottier for a bit and hence I will be quieter.
